    • It's nice to meet you Eddie. And yes, that is a crazy cool last name, and I am pretty sure I don't know how to pronounce it. Hey! It's good to know we are both fans of video games, though I haven't had too much of an opportunity to play Fallout, though I love the whole concept of post-apocalyptic games, like Day-Z and the Red Dead Redemptions, and even Grand Theft Auto (Yes, I know Grand Theft Auto isn't apocalyptic). I don't frequent Reddit, but I am a Tumblr and Imgur guy but I wouldn't mind checking Reddit out, as it seems pretty cool. I do like music as well and I couldn't give a definite answer as to whom my favorites are. It's good to finally get to know each other!

    • Hi Elissa, I'm Derrie! You said you were from the pueblo of Laguna. I looked it up and it says the population is 3,600. The population of Carroll is about 10,000, but I used to live in a town with a population of 41. It's a big difference. It also said you have corn dancers. What are they? Is it fun? You said you are really into math and that's me too! I want to go to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for actuarial science. I'm completely opposite of you, I'm actually an only child. What caught your interest in dentistry?

    • Hi Kristin, I'm Derrie! You said you were from the pueblo of San Felipe. I looked it up and it says there's a population of 2,080. Carroll has a population of about 10,000, but I used to live in a small town called Aspinwall, Iowa. It has a population of about 40. You mentioned that you play soccer, and so do I! I've been playing since I was little as well. I looked up your soccer team. In Iowa, we play soccer in the spring- which sucks because the weather is so wishy-washy. You also said you are pretty straight forward with people. I am too, mostly because I can't lie to save my life, but it's a lot better than hiding things from others. I'm an only child and live with my mom. After high school, I would like to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I hope to do something with actuarial science. What caught your interest in Athletic Training?

    • It's nice to meet you Giles! I can definitely tell that being boring is not your thing! You seem like a very bright and interesting character, and that's always good! I as well enjoy the occasional horror movie, but comedies are more of my forte. I can see you share a mutual love for turtles along with some of your other fellow students, and I myself am also a fan of the small reptilian creatures. I am a very active person and I love having something to keep me busy at all times, I hate being bored. I believe that we also share the mutual need to explore and experience the world. Can't learn much staying in one place your whole life. Iowa is a very bland and boring place to live, that's why I plan on leaving at the earliest opportunity. As to where I would go, no clue yet! I can't wait to get to know you as well as your other classmates better! Until then, au revoir!

    • Hey Dymond. I'm Levi Shield and I'm 17. I did some research on Navajo and it looks like that is the biggest tribe. That's pretty awesome. I was wondering if your tribe had any special traditions? Like any special holidays or just anything that is different from other tribes. I read that you guys have your own language. Do you speak anything other than English? I noticed Gallup is a good drive from your school. So is Albuquerque. I can see why you stay in a dorm. Do you stay at your dorm all the time or do you go home on the weekends? What about breaks? Living in a dorm in high school is so different for me to picture. Everyone here goes home after school and we all live fairly close. I wouldn't say I'm a classic rock fan but I don't mind it. I'm more into country and hip hop. But not gonna lie I do listen to rock sometimes.

    • Hello Brandon, I'm Levi Shield and I'm also 17. Is it hard being a "mutt?" I mean I obviously don't think it would but I don't know what it's like there. That's cool that you get to experience both tribes traditions though. So I guess my next question would be are there any special traditions with either of those tribes? I also enjoy music. I would have to agree Ariana Grande is a pretty good artist. She is also very pretty. I've never really listened to EDM so I don't know what you mean. It looks like you move around a little bit. What's it like living on a reservation? That actually sounds like a pretty cool profession. I would tell you what I wanna do but I don't really know yet. I play football and I used to run track but I didn't go out this year. I used to watch the Walking Dead just because I heard so much about it but I haven't watched it in a while. Well it was good to learn about what it's like down there, bye.

    • Jonathan, welcome--thanks for being the first SFIS student to respond. On which reservation do you live?
  • My name is William Polking, or as I am better known here at CHS, "Polking." (Teachers at CHS are addressed primarily by their last names, which doesn't bother me but is interesting from a cultural perspective.) I teach 9th reading, college composition, an elective called Media Literacy, and this smallish section of English 11.

Long ago (Ms. Guerin can tell you how long) I used to work at the late, lamented St. Catherine Indian School. I worked in the dorm and also taught English. Any stories Ms. Guerin tells about me are complete lies (unless they make me look good, in which case they are the unvarnished truth). And if you want stories about Ms. Guerin, I'll be happy to oblige.

I also coach Large Group and Individual Speech, and I have been coaching soccer most of my career after leaving New Mexico. I often miss New Mexico, and part of me will always regret leaving the state and working with Native students. (And I regret leaving the food. It's almost lunch time as I write this, and I would KILL for some green chile stew, posole, Jemez enchiladas, frito pie, fry bread, mutton stew, sopas, biscochitos, y los otros.)

In my non-existent free time, I read like it's my job (it sort of is) and watch an unhealthy amount of soccer. I am also a huge Walking Dead fan, as my picture might indicate.

      • Thanks, Giles. Your introduction was hilarious. And I had never thought about it, but you are dead right--some of the pueblos do look like Afghanistan.
  • I am Levi Shield. I am 17 years old. I feel like I'm 105 though. Which sucks because I don't even wanna know what I'm gonna feel like when I get older. I live in Templeton, Iowa. But I go to school here in Carroll, Iowa. That also sucks because it's a 20 minute drive everyday. Long story short that gets expensive and racks up the miles on my truck. Which leads to my pride and joy. My truck. I love my truck more than anything. I worked extremely hard to be able to afford my truck. I've been working since a very young age to afford my truck. I've worked a lot of long hours. For one thing: my truck. Anyway I currently work at Farner Bocken. I enjoy hanging out with friends. I also play football. I spend my free time working and relaxing. Every now and then I'll play some video games. I am the way I am because of my parents. They have always pushed me and they expect big things out of me. I plan on going to college and getting nice job and living happily ever after. That about sums it up.
