I picked this song because I use to like it alot, and it has a lot of meaning. The first verse of Major Lazer's song, Justin begins singing "Everybody gets high sometimes, you know- What else can we do when we're feeling low?" This line probably is referring to drug use because Bieber is assuming his friend needs some cheering up and that he understands that she would get high when she is "feeling low."

Ed Sheeran is listed co-writer and marks the second time that Sheeran has worked with Bieber and the first being "Love Yourself." "And if you feel you're sinking, I will jump right over- Into cold, cold water for you" This meaning that they are trying to portray is that if someone fell overboard into water that he would help them. I think this song can really relate to a lot of people that are struggling. I never really listened to Justin Bieber as a kid but I never realized how much people can relate to them.

I never really liked Justin Bieber because I kinda thought that his songs were about all these things I didn't really understand as a kid. Now that I am older I kinda understand what he is trying to say.  Basically Bieber is trying to tell us that he will do anything to keep her safe, even if they aren't together, they are just the closest friends.

  • This song does a have a lot of meaning and I think its about a love story, not a friendship. I've heard this song countless times on the radio. The first line I feel he is inferring that people go do drugs/alcohol when they are depressed because for a short period they will be happy. I feel like this verse "And if you feel you're sinking, I will jump right over- Into cold, cold water for you" means for anything if that person needs help. The cold, cold water is an exaggeration of how far he is willing to go.
  • I listened to Justin Bieber when I younger, I loved his songs. A lot of them are on the radio, so I kind of still listen to them, but I dont usually think about the meaning behind the lyrics. I think the song Cold Water is about Justins friend or girlfriend struggling with depression. A lot of times Depression is compared to drowning, and that would really fit into the lyrics here. "I will jump right over into cold, cold water for you" is saying hes willing to go through this struggle with her even if it is painful. It could also be drug use, alcoholism, or a bad relationship, but in my eyes depression fit best in the song.
  • I got that it was a person helping someone through a hard time, or depression. I got this from the lines "So take a deep breath and let it go You shouldn't be drowning on your own", "And if you feel you're sinking, I will jump right over Into cold, cold water for you", "I won't let go I'll be your lifeline tonight", "You shouldn't be fighting on your own", and "Save me from my rocking boat I just wanna stay afloat I'm all alone And I hope someone’s gonna take me home".
  • I agree with the first paragraph. I even wrote on my paper that most people turn to drugs when they are depressed or going through something. When I actually listened to the lyrics, I thought it had to do something with Selena. Megan and I were talking about how Selena was in rehab for depression. Maybe Justin was saying he'd always be there for her. When he said, "And although time may take us into different places I will still be patient with you," that he was saying no matter how far they drifted apart, he's still going to wait for her. I believe this is a love song because it mentioned something about wanting to lay with her until he's old.
  • When listening to this song, I thought of it was like depression and everything and how people need help getting through somethings. Then when I talked to my partner and she mentioned something about relationships I saw that side to. I wrote how we may have issues in our life, but I'll be there for you, and I'll save you from the hardships in your life. I won't give up on you even if our lives take us a different direction in life. I guess this song is more of a relationship song now because of the line that says, "And I wanna lay with you til I'm old."
  • Good song with a pretty clear meaning. Justin Bieber sings about how he understands everything isn't always roses and he understands their struggles, he wants to be there to support them. He also makes a point in that his support isn't temporary, he wants to be there to support them for the long haul. The girls lyrics support the notion that she needs support and things in her life aren't going super well and that she actually wants support from Bieber or at least something along those lines.
  • I had a feeling the song was about friendship, but I had thought that if the friend had gotten into trouble Bieber would've helped them out no matter the trouble. In my opinion the watery aspect of the song really helps to portray the friendship that bonds the two of them together. I had considered at first that it was a love song, but after a bit I thought the song was more about caring friendship than anything else. The only reason I considered it to be a love song was because it had a male singer and a female singer, not much else other than "And I wanna lay with you 'til I'm old" alludes to a love song.
  • I never really listened to Justin Bieber, and to be honest, whenever I heard him on the radio I never even knew it was him until I looked it up. It pains me to say his newer music is actually not trash. This song is pretty clear about the message it conveys, because of all the lyricism that relates to the backing problem. "Everybody gets high sometimes, you know. What else can we do when we're feeling low?" is the lyric that basically sets the mood for what the song is going to be about. I interpreted it as being the one being sung about is in drug rehabilitation and they're feeling depressed and alone because of it. It's actually not that bad of a song and has actual meaning to it rather than repeating "baby" a thousand times. Overall, meaningful song and a nice choice for S.O.T.D
  • Great song choice. This is a very popular song. Maddie was my partner for this, and we talked about this song being about Selena Gomez. Selena and Justin have been on and off for years now and it seems like they are constantly writing songs about eachother. Selena just got out of rehab for anxiety and depression, and I think this song is saying that no matter if they are broken up, he will still be there for her and will always want to be with her. If she is feeling lonely and sad, he will be there no matter what, and that she doesn't need to turn to drugs just for that reason, because he will take care of her and get her back on her feet. This song could have a completely different meaning, but that's just what I took from it.
  • I'm the opposite of you, and I was a HUGE Bieber fan in middle school. Since then, many people know my music taste has drastically changed. I've actually never heard this song until today, but I liked that he had a self medicating image of this song. I think this is an important issue that needs to be talked about more. I thought he was saying he would help this girl through her addictions and her problems no matter what because he cares about her, whether it was as a friend or a girlfriend. I thought this was a really good song choice.
